The artist about his work:

CARLOS SAAVEDRA

"People have so many stories to tell and I want to be able to draw something more out of a face"

BIO

Carlos Saavedra, or Carli, as his friends call him, recalls that during his childhood in Cartagena he always felt a profound attraction towards his grandfatherā€™s antique Polaroid. Every time someone took his picture he longed to be the one behind the lens.

Now twenty-four, he is a professional photographer whose main interest is in portraits.

Carlos has worked with various Colombian magazines, and his photographs achieved the editorā€™s selection in 2012ā€™s National Geographic contest and have been exhibited at the Getty Images gallery in London. In December 2011 he was selected by the Inter-American Development Bank to exhibit The Daughters of Huitaca in Washington, and the series will be shown in BogotĆ” in February of 2012. But the most important exhibit has already passed. Carlos returned to each one of the communities that he visited during his trip to show the photographs, and at the end gifted them to their protagonists. That way he created a true exchange, a relationship. ā€œSome of the women were quite taken aback,ā€ he says, ā€œnot everyone is accustomed to seeing themselves reflected so profoundly.ā€
